Masters Monday - 8

My commitment to posting about the Master Knitters Program each Monday is the only thing that is inching me forward at this point. With the knitting all done it's just paperwork from here on out. It's a slow process because, like a procrastinating school student, I often don't touch the "assignment" until Sunday night or early Monday morning --- right before it's "due".

I have now finished answering ALL the questions, including a mini essay on tension problems and another on yarn substitutions. All that's between me and my submission of Level 1 for evaluation is a detailed report on the blocking and care of knits and a bibliography. Hopefully this will be in the mail next week.

I so admire your ability and talent! Week before last I tried knitting my gauge swatch for a hat and gave up. It was at least 1& 1/2 inchs to wide. This is an old story for me...so I went down to my craft/sewing room and had lots of fun with inks and collage. I love to see what you are doing though. That is so very impressive...good for you Marlene!!

Maggie Ann, I'm a loose knitter too. Are you aware that it is quite alright to go down several needle sizes if it is what is necessary for you to reach gauge? I NEVER am able to use the suggested size. When I knit my first gauge swatch for any given project I begin with needles two sizes smaller than recommended. Sometimes I end up going back up one, so it's always good to double check.

anagharad, it's too early for contratulations just yet. I still have the blocking/care of knits report and a bibliography yet to do. NEXT Monday I hope to be done.

Marlene-

Could you tell me how you blocked your swatches? My edges keep curling... but I haven't steam blocked them yet and thought I'd do that.

Had our sweet baby on Saturday! (see my husband's blog: themangotimes.com) Only a matter of time for your daughter! Hang in there.

Wow Kenj, you are quite the amazing woman. Giving birth on Saturday and back at your Master Knitters program by Monday. Barely broke your stride hey? Congratulations! He's beautiful.

I've been blocking my swatches the same way I block finished garments and gauge swatches. I soak the item in warm water for 10 - 20 minutes, roll it in a towel and squeeze it (or step on it) to remove as much water as possible, and then pin it out to the measurements and let dry completely before removing the pins.

Thank you. These little unfinished edges are stubborn!

Not a Supermom- just resting on my bed with new baby, laptop, and swatches ;)

I'll try it again with smaller needles. Trouble is I've been down that road before too with little success. I'd LOVE to have a gauge even come close. Better run and practise cello first though. I broke a string the other day and am hoping like crazy everything stays in tune...more snow here and cello's don't like cold weather.
